19th January - Annabelle
Once we had breakfast a local lady who runs the Women’s Group come and talk to us about the Trash for Cash scheme that they have set up and what good it has done for diversifying the incomes of local families.
Next we all piled into the van and headed to the beach to clean up to clean up all the plastic. At first glance it didn’t seem like there was much litter but we all filled up a sack each surprisingly quickly.
We had a delicious lentil lunch and then drove to another local village for a water appreciation activity. All the women of the village brought their plastic cans and we took it in turns to pump the water out of a bore hole. We then attempted to carry them on our heads back to houses, some unlucky ones had to walk further than others!
The other group built a Jiko stove out of cement and breeze blocks.
On our way back we stopped at the local market and found some treasures! Mainly T-shirts and shorts along with some jewellery and tried our best to negotiate prices!
After supper we played a very funny quiz and went to bed with aching shoulders and very flat heads!
