23rd January - Dom and Will
Dom’s blog of Watamu:
This morning me and Alec may or may not have woken up about 5 minutes before we were supposed to leave. So we ran into the main room and grabbed a couple slices of bread before we left.
The drive to Watamu was roughly 2 hours and wasn’t too bad considering the amount of people in the van. The music and the conversations made it quite a lot of fun.
Once we had arrived in Watamu we went straight to the Local Ocean turtle protection conservation and learned about the problems they have. One thing that I found really sad was that humans are the turtles greatest threat.
Later on, we went to a snake park where some people were very hesitant because, you know, they’re snakes. But it was really interesting learning about how they collect the venom and use it to produce enough anti-venom to supply a large portion of Eastern Africa. I may or may not have tried to scare absolutely everyone, which no one else found funny.
Not long after that, we went to have lunch at the most beautiful restaurant on the edge of a river, which was supposed to be a suprise, but someone had been before so we knew what to expect. Either way it was a cool place to have lunch and jump off the edge into the water.
Towards the end of the day, we went to the Ocean Sports restaurant and went swimming in the most pristine blue water. Me and Tom swam out to a collection of rocks before returning to bury Issy and myself in the sand which was fun.
Then, inevitably we had the long awaited drive home which was a mix between speakers that needed charging, cramped spaces and a lot of very tired passengers. Despite all that it was still really fun.
Will’s blog of Watamu
Today we had a loverly 2-hour car Journey to Watamu, we started of in the Turtle sanctuary where we met Yaya the turtle. From there we went onto the snake park where just the sign itself gave me butterflies and then later went on to hold a snake! Everyone loved the snake park especially when they milked one of the snakes. This means getting the venom out for making anti-venoms. The first animal we saw was a baby crocodile which was sat on a log and looked rather artificial. Phoebe, engaging minimal brain power, decided to poke it with a stick! She later found out it’s was real - gaining a sin for our team.
After the snake park we went to the Lichthaus restaurant which was incredible. The food was amazing as we could have meat - a rare occurrence due to the new vegetarian diet (Mc Donald’s will be high on my to do list when I get home). I had pineapple octopus, pork and chicken an amazing threesome of meats that came with salad of choice. This spot had nets hanging over the water where you could lie and chat which gave me Love Island vibes. A load of us jumped off the netting into the water where the current was very strong taking Phoebe (again causing drama) away down the creek, I then became the new Hasselhof and saved her life.
After lunch we went to Oceans Sport which was an unreal beach with the whitest sand where we carried on the ‘pombe’ (alcohol in Swahili). The day ended with dinner back home and an early night ready for the next day.
