Wednesday 19th July - Xander

Today, we visited one of the local Kenyan villages for the Water Appreciation activity. We managed to fill up over a hundred buckets. Everyone took it in turns and rotated tasks in order to be as productive as possible. Despite the minibus getting stuck, we all worked together in order to solve the problem and the vehicle was eventually away.

For lunch, we were served a delicious pasty with soup before our next volunteering task in the afternoon.

Groups were divided into two and both groups visited a school. We helped the kids dig up dirt, find rocks and compact it all together in order to create vertical gardens. Each member of a group would host a different team of people from the school guiding them. There was a competition to be the first ones to create a vertical garden as well. The kids were very excited to see us so we danced to some Kenyan and British music afterwards, learning and understanding more of each other’s cultures.

Finally, we finished off the day at Vipingo Ridge where we dined pizza and spent some time socialising after a long hard day of work.

Oceans Alive says:
Water appreciation is a great way for Leapers to get involved in the community and see how the other half lives. Running water is a rarity in our area and the Leapers see first hand how precious a commodity it is - especially when each bucket of water is pumped by hand at a central well and then carried home - usually on the head. No so easy as the Leapers find out - often by getting a soaking!
