11th March - Sarah
Following our busy, fun, and tiring week, we decided to take a lazier Saturday so a group of us (girl’s trip!) decided to take a wander on the beach. That very quickly turned to dodging sea urchins left and right with increasingly elaborate (and successful) acrobatics before we found a path (urchin-free) leading out to the open ocean at the edge of the reef. We followed it of course, all the way to the edge. It wasn’t apart of the Marine Protected Area so we didn’t see any big fish or much coral like when we had snorkelled, but we did see a number of bright red and pink starfish (yay!) which added a lot of colour to the walk. The edge of the reef was very cool as the water on the other side was so different than the inside the reef. No one brought their phone so we couldn’t take any pictures to show the boys (but we still think they were jealous). No one brought watches either so we may or may not have missed lunch (oops) but we still got food anyway (chapati—so it was delicious). We all had a great time out on the water, however, the redheads both returned feeling a little bit crispy…
After lunch, we started a multi-day game of “Human Cluedo” which is kind of like the board game except that everyone is trying to murder people and stay alive rather than solve the crime! We all got a target person, a random object (eg. a toothbrush or Anna’s iconic yellow crocs), and a location, and the goal is to get your target to hold the object in the location which kills them. Then you get their target and so on and so until there’s only one person left standing. What’s crazy is that you can be killed at any time so you always need to look over your shoulder—something I am apparently very bad at!
In the late afternoon, literally only hours after we started, I was peacefully reading at Latif (a table area within an excellent view of the water, and, unbeknownst to me, my future murder location) when James approached with his book and some hand sanitiser to read as well (which seems innocent enough). I was engrossed in reading The Silmarillion (very nerdy, I know) when, getting up, he “knocked” his hand sanitiser off the table. With a well placed swear he totally sold it and I gullibly picked it up for him.
I was murdered!
Following my death and then dinner, we did something that no Leap group had ever done before—we went clubbing in Mtwapa! According to the resident clubbing experts of our group (should I name names?), the UK clubs have significantly fewer tables and more dancing but we all had a fantastic time rocking to the music.
Coco and Emily had a dance lesson from Sam, Anna absolutely killed it on the dance floor, and we ended a great day well into the following morning.
