8th June - Charlie
In the words of Ice Cube, Today was a good day.
We started the day off with a lovely breakfast; fresh mango and pineapple alongside some very well loved French toast.
We shortly after embarked upon our first activity of the day. We arrived at the office, waited for the rain to pass and headed out to snorkel. We saw a lot of the vast biodiversity Kenya has to offer - a nice way to spend World Ocean Day!
We were even lucky enough to spot a lion fish, which is my favourite fish. It’s elegance in the water was truly astounding. We then made our way to the coral nursery. These are recycled tables that are used to replant coral. Underneath was a rather large school of Batfish which were stunning.
We came back in, rehydrated and geared up for our beach clean. In this we teamed up with locals from nearby environmental groups as well as students from a local school, allowing us to test out our Swahili and also meet new people and share our experiences of the ocean. This was a real treat.
We made our way back to HQ for lunch, watched a video on the livelihoods of local fisherman which was eye opening to the struggles that fishermen have experienced in recent years.
Not long after, we found a pump which allowed us to have a game of beach rugby, Juma (one of our hosts) picked up the game very quickly and Daphne really showed her sporting prowess scoring 2 tries in the process. It was much needed exercise and really great fun!
Following that, we had some food and had a movie night in to rest up for our big Friday at Future Hope school.
What a first full day it was.
