Leap July 2023
Welcome to our latest cohort of Leapers. It’s great to have you all with us at Kuruwitu. After a weekend of relaxing, catching up, tennis and orientation, everyone is ready to start getting involved in our activities at Oceans Alive.
This week we’ve got a full schedule of educational, interesting and fun activities. On this blog we will have a daily update and pictures which will give details of the day and also give a flavour of the team and will give friends and family a bit of insight into the amazing 4-weeks at Kuruwitu.
Already the team are very well settled in and are loving being here - and that is only after a few days!
This week focuses on our trash-to-cash program with beach clean ups and plastic sorting as well as hearing from the community Women’s Group how plastic collection is a much needed source of revenue. We will start Swahili lessons which are aimed to give the basic words and phrases needed while you’re here. We have an introduction to our marine protected area, learning to identify fish species, an introduction to our permaculture farming project, an intro to the safari, diving and sailing options and the first jiko (stoves) making session in the village. We have a day at the village school, a village walk and visit to the market plus many more interesting and exciting activities.
With humpback whales spotted jumping at Kuruwitu on Sunday we are all going to be scanning the sea for a glimpse - or more - of the ongoing humpback migration on our door-step.
It’s going to be a busy week - as always at Kuruwitu - and we will keep you up to date.
