Monday 9th October - Shae

 Beach clean

An early start for Monday as we started the day with a beach clean up. We filled the back of the van with a massive 107 kg’s of rubbish!! We went back and sorted it all into different piles and then discussed a plan for recycling some of the plastic - Kasa will be making a mural and Taa will be making a 3D structure resembling a section of the reef. We had a presentation by Safari (a key member of the office family at Oceans Alive) to learn more about the history of Oceans Alive and what they do in marine conservation. Later in the evening we went for sunset to an incredible pool in Vipingo, where we had a BBQ and were given a presentation by Chris and Janine Angel who run the safari trip to Tsavo National Park. They outlined all of the fun activities and wildlife that the volunteers would experience on this 4 day safari which they are all super excited to embark at the end of week 3.

Oceans Alive says:

Beach clean ups are an important part of life at Kuruwitu. Every tide brings in a new load of flotsam and jetsam and lots of plastic - often washed up on our shores but originating from other countries. We sort the washed up plastic and it is taken away by a community women’s group who then sell it on for a few shillings. We have helped the women’s group to establish and have supported their growth and will continue to do so in the future.
