Sunday 21st January - Archie
Our day started off slowly following a brilliant night at Salty’s in Kilifi. A few of us decided to go to the local church for a swahili service in the morning. It was a very memorable service involving lots of dancing with the local community and even having to stand up in front of everyone to introduce ourselves. It was a truly heartwarming experience and those who went are already keen for another service following our safari this weekend.
Following the church visit in the morning, we rested before embarking on a dhow trip, which was most definitely the highlight of the day. The boat anchored and everyone jumped into the sea, with most following Callum’s advice and coating their faces with the clay from the ocean floor. A couple of us made the regrettable decision to swim all the way to a nearby island, only to learn as we the beach was covered by sharp tree roots, making the trip pointless. We then had a very chill evening, with chicken and chips for supper, adding further enjoyment to an already great day.
Oceans Alive says:-
Church in Shariani is always fun and the community go out of their way to welcome Leapers to the community. Your hard work at permaculture and water appreciation and at Future Hope creates a lot of good will which the community like to reflect back to you when they can. Church is also a great example of ‘you get back what you put in’ with your enthusiasm being met with more enthusiasm from the community. Church is an important part of life in Kenya and almost everyone goes - even if its just for the social and singing (and dancing).
Sunset dhow trips are just wonderful any day of the week! However, a Sunday chilled dhow trip is perfect. Sometimes the bioluminescence is amazing too and can outshine the stars above! Proper Avatar stuff at certain times of the year.
