13th January - Alec

After going through security and walking around the airport for a while i bumped into Will and Etty. We then spent a further 30 minutes trying to find the Café Nero where we were meant to meet up with the rest of the group. We lost hope of finding anyone so we headed to the gate where we found the café and the rest of the group. After an hour of chilling with everyone in the café we all boarded the plane.

The flight was comfortable despite being 8 hours long and when we landed in Ethiopia it was relatively smooth to get through security. We had a two hour wait before our connection flight took off which was a good time to get to know each other.

Landing in Kenya was the first time we realised just how hot it was going to be. Half of us were not dressed for the heat, so we were desperate to get through security. After an hour or so we all had shown our passports and our visas, picked up our luggage and made it out. We met with the team leaders outside of the airport (Nella, Lizzie, Simbi and Georgia), our bags were loaded onto vans and we split into 3 groups to drive the base at Kuruwitu. We had been driving for five minutes when the police pulled us over, took Lizzie’s drivers license, and told her to drive to the police station. As a group we thought it was funny and probably weren’t taking it as serious as we would be expected to. Lizzie reassured us that there was nothing to worry about, they were just looking for a bribe and there wasn’t much anyone could do about it as the police in Kenya have the authority to do that.

After all that was dealt with we continued our journey which was a really nice way to bond with everyone in the van. The drive was an hour and a half and we spent most of the time chatting and looking out the window at the new scenery.

When we arrived we had lunch and a quick introduction to meet the team, then shown our rooms and given the rest of the day to chill. All in all, a pretty solid introduction to Kenya.
