25th June - Imogen

We decided to rise early this morning, in the hope of spotting some serious game. We rolled straight out of bed and into the van. The sun, rising bright red over the savannah, accompanied us on the way to a craggy hill. We lucked out massively, spotting a pride of lions - 12 in total, which, we’ve been told, is fairly large. While the adolescents play-fought, the adults looked on, before sauntering towards and past the van.

The sun rose from behind the hill and beautifully backlit our view of the lions climbing the rocks, with some pretty adorable cubs following behind. By this time, we were pretty ready for the all-you-can-eat breakfast that awaited us, which did not disappoint; upon our return, the watering hole was caked in buffalo - an entire herd (probably 500) had descended on the lodge. Charlie became indistinguishable from the fauna, considering he demolished about 5 separate plates of breakfast. Mind you, the rest of us weren’t all that far behind. Around 10am we set off on the road again. Driving for hours through empty savannah was both beautiful and slightly disconcerting. All eyes descended on the water barrels - hypothetically speaking, how long would they last us?

Four hours into the one hour journey, we made our way to the camp at Kulalu. What had been described to us as ‘basic’ turned out to be pretty lavish. We settled into our tents (glamping style), before enjoying a silver service supper overlooking the river. The dulcet oinking of nearby hippos soothed us to sleep for another jam packed day tomorrow.
