Saturday - 7th October - Shae
First day full day in Kenya!
The day started at 08.00 with breakfast, followed by the arrival of the spritely ‘Team Sayari’. This initiative aims to educate local school children about the wonders of the marine environment and conservation. After the lectures and activities, the kids ran straight down to the beach - all very exited!! They all went crazy playing all sorts of games and swimming in the sea with the volunteers. Team Sayari left at 11.30, and the volunteers were given time to get their bearings around Bahari Hai - the darts board was quickly found. In the late afternoon we all made our way to the beach bar - a lovely sundowner spot 2 minures from Bahari Hai. Split into our teams - Shaes team ‘Taa’ (meaning manta-ray in Swahili) & Ed’s Team ‘Kasa’ (meaning turtle in Swahili), we had our first few games of volleyball, the games were valiantly fought and team Taa came out on top. After eating dinner back at Bahari Hai, Juma and Omar (two of the brilliant staff at Bahari Hai) organized a big bonfire on the beach for the gang. Lots of games and laughter shared under the stars to the sound of crashing waves ended a lovely day.
Oceans Alive says:
The ‘Team Sayari’ project is what brings local school children to Pope every Saturday. Working with the US State Department, Nat Geo, Disney Channel, US AID and Wildlife Direct, Oceans Alive delivers important conservation education in a fun and interactive way. The children love it and often come even when we are not running a session! Thank you so much for getting involved with the children and what a fun way to interact with an impromptu dance! Team Sayari is an important part of our community conservation work and its great for you to see it first hand so early on in your trip.
