Thursday 8th Feb - Harry
Today we woke up early as we visited the local quarry workers who were working in very difficult conditions, so we decided to give them all protective equipment such as masks and glasses to protect them from the dust.
From there we travelled to the local village where we built jiko stoves with help from Juma and we also had a tour around the village to learn about the history of it and the different buildings.
After we all came back for a wonderful lunch, which was followed by our final fish lecture in preparation for the test on tuesday. After the fish lecture we split into two groups and one group went on a boat trip while my group visited the local caves.
When we arrived at the caves we met our tour guide called Safari and the elderly couple who live right next to the caves. Shortly after we embarked on our walk to the caves, which was very challenging. The caves were very big with lots of bats and many strange bugs like the tailless whip scorpion! We also saw a monitor lizard from a distance at the bottom of a cave. Also in the caves we found a fresh water source that the locals would go to and pray. The whole experience of the caves was fun but also quite eerie as we were told that they are apparently spirits living down there.
After we climbed out of the caves we got invited into the ladies house who told us about the history of the caves, which was very fascinating as they were used in the 15th century for the slave trade before the slaves got sent off to Europe and America. We then travelled back to popes and we all enjoyed a great dinner after an action packed day.
